Welcome to the California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation’s Diabetes Quality Improvement Project Clinical Education Program. In 2011, we will present numerous programs that are targeted to help you improve the quality of care provided to patients with diabetes. By providing diverse educational activities that aim to increase knowledge, attitude, skills, and enhance practice performance amongst clinicians, we believe we can impact diabetes management and outcomes.

- Describe the pathophysiology and potential complications of type 2 diabetes
- Articulate the clinical significance of treating type 2 diabetes as a cardiovascular disease equivalent
- Describe how you can avoid cardiovascular complications of type 2 diabetes
- Manage diabetes to increase the use of lipid lowering medications and aspirin to prevent cardiovascular complications in appropriate patients

ABOUT GORDON L. FUNG, MD, MPH, PhD, FACC, FAHA, FACP
Dr. Gordon L. Fung, a cardiologist, is an expert in the treatment of heart disease with a special interest in cardiac rehabilitation, cardiovascular pharmacology, echocardiography and preventive cardiology. He is the Director of Cardiology Services at UCSF Medical Center, directs the Electrocardiography Laboratory at the medical center's Parnassus location, and is the associate director of the Non-Invasive Laboratory. Dr. Fung's research explores advances in preventive cardiology and electrocardiography.
Dr. Fung earned a master's degree in public health in hospital economics and administration at the University of California, Berkeley and a medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed an internal medicine residency and was chief resident at Highland General Hospital in Oakland. He completed a cardiology fellowship at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinez, Calif. In 2007, Dr.Fung was awarded a doctorate degree from the California Institute of Integral Studies in Chinese Philosophy. He is active in the American Heart Association and has served on the association's national board of directors as well as Governor of Northern California and President of the California Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Fung is clinical professor of medicine and cardiology at UCSF.
