Questions and Answers About the
Campaign
Why does the Foundation need an Endowment
Fund?
Endowment income provides key benefits to the CMA Foundation:
- Financial Stability. Income from an Endowment can
smooth out the rough spots in the fiscal year. Endowment
income can be used to underwrite programs that have not
been funded, support budgets when there are shortfalls,
and help us realize our visionary ideas.
- Initiate New Projects. New and innovative programs
and services often experience difficulty in getting the
initial "seed" money. With income from the Endowment
Fund, the CMA Foundation can start new initiatives,
reach out to provide new services, and respond quickly to a crisis such as pandemic flu.
- Support Core Operating Expenses. In order to provide
community health programs and other projects of the CMA
Foundation, core operating expenses of the Foundation must
be covered, i.e. rent, utilities, etc.
What is the goal of the Endowment Fund?
The initial goal is to raise $20 million in cash and pledges.
Our intent is to create lone-term financial stability for
the CMA Foundation. Building an Endowment Fund allows
us to generate a stable and adequate source of income to sustain
our current programs and initiate new ones to meet the needs
of physicians and their patients in California.
How are these funds invested and monitored?
CMA Foundation's funds are expertly managed by Smith
Barney and overseen by the CMA Foundation Board of Directors.
The Board has approved an investment policy that outlines
our investment objectives and performance evaluation measures
for the funds.
Can I designate my Endowment Fund pledge to be used for
a specific purpose or program?
If you are donating the minimum amount required, you may create
a named Endowment Fund or a donor-advised fund. See our website
(www.thecmafoundation.org)
for additional information. All other funds pledged will be
placed in the General Endowment Fund. Only the investment
revenue will be spent - the principal will be held in perpetuity.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes, the CMA Foundation is a non-profit organization accorded
tax exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 510(c)(3)
which enables donors to deduct gifts made to the Foundation
to the fullest extent of tax laws. Donors should consult their
own tax accountant, attorney, or financial advisor to determine
the most advantageous tax or financial situation.
