Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO)

A note from our Chair: Dr. Margaret Juarez, MD

As the chair of NEPO, I would like to thank you for visiting our website and also extend special thanks to the CMA Foundation staff for their work in communicating the NEPO activities via our website, newsletter, and Facebook page. We hope to inspire physicians and healthcare providers to participate in community health efforts and to be challenged to improve healthcare and the quality of life in their communities.

Building healthier communities is a key component of what community physicians are about. NEPO embraces these challenges and encourages physicians and healthcare providers to come out of their offices and work with other organizations across the state to make California healthier for all. Please join us in building on and expanding the important work of NEPO.

Sincerely,

Margaret Juarez, MD
NEPO Chair

The Ethnic Physician Organization Network (NEPO) is a coalition of more than 50 ethnic physician organizations in California. NEPO began as a project of the California Medical Association Foundation in June, 2002 at the first Ethnic Physician Organization Summit.

NEPO works to:

  •  Identify strategies for building the capacity of ethnic physician organizations.
  •  Reduce health disparities and improve access to health care for their communities  through increased collaboration with community organizations. For instance, NEPO supports a network of ethnic physician leaders to serve as community health advocates throughout California and encourages physicians to expand their roles in their communities beyond their work as clinicians.
  • Participate in policy-advocacy efforts both in the public sector and within organized medicine.
  •  Address diversity and cultural competency in the health care workforce. For instance, NEPO encourages ethnic physician leadership development at the local, regional, and statewide level. NEPO also identifies young physicians that it can encourage to become involved in ethnic physician organizations.

The Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO) hope to inspire change in the community by:

  • Supporting a network of ethnic physician leaders to serve as community health advocates throughout California
  • Strengthening the collaboration between ethnic physician and community-based organizations.
  • Deepening the relationship between physicians and community members to improve the health of their communities.
  •  Encouraging ethnic physician leadership development at the local, regional, and statewide level.
  •  Addressing the issues of health disparities and access to care.
  •  Increasing the workforce diversity and cultural competency of California's healthcare system.
  •  Encouraging and identify young ethnic physicians to become involved in ethnic physician organizations.
  •  Encouraging ethnic physicians to expand their roles in the local community beyond their role as clinicians.
  •  Providing the local community with the ethnic physician's perspective on community health issues.
