Sacramento CMA member wins AMA Foundation's Excellence in Medicine Award

The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation has awarded Sacramento area physician and U.S. Air Force Reserve Colonel Darryl Hunter, M.D., its prestigious Excellence in Medicine award. Dr. Hunter was recognized for his outstanding leadership and exceptional service to veterans, students and underserved community members. The award was presented to Dr. Hunter during AMA’s national meeting in Chicago last week.

“As an AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Award winner, Dr. Hunter reminds us all what it means to be a doctor – caring, compassionate and selfless,” said Steven W. Churchill, executive director of the AMA Foundation. “Dr. Hunter’s work with veterans and his leadership in providing access for community cancer screenings is inspirational and deserves the recognition. The world needs more people like Dr. Hunter.”

Dr. Hunter is the founder of three Northern California non-profits, unified by their inspirational commitment to patient care. The Sacramento Community Veterans Alliance, Sacramento Community Cancer Coalition and Dr. Ernest and Arthella Hunter Foundation all work to reduce cancer deaths in underserved communities, connect veterans to the quality care they deserve and inspire the next generation of physicians to treat the underserved.

“The award is a tribute to the compassion and commitment of hundreds of students and physicians who volunteer at UC Davis affiliated student-run clinics,” said Dr. Hunter. “I am personally humbled by this honor and give thanks to my father who taught me to serve and my mother who taught me to give.”
