SAVE THE DATE FOR THE 19TH ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION AND AWARDS GALA

The California Medical Association (CMA) and the CMA Foundation invite you to the 19th Annual President’s Reception and Awards Gala, October 17, at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa in Anaheim. The black tie event will immediately follow CMA’s annual House of Delegates session that day. Entertainment for this year's Gala includes The Power Mix, a 15-piece band featuring a team of male and female vocalists covering the best-loved songs and dance hits from yesterday and today. World Hepatitis Day July 28 is World Hepatitis Day.  It is a day of awareness, prevention, and remembrance.  Hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide are currently living with a form of hepatitis and over a million individuals die each year from the disease.  Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer if untreated, but it can be treated through early detection. CMA Foundation and NEPO provide Hepatitis C screenings at Crenshaw HealthFest The California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation and its Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO) were proud to partner with Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley Thomas this past weekend as co-sponsors of the first annual Crenshaw HealthFest in Los Angeles. The HealthFest took place on Saturday, July 11 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. Featuring over 25 community organizations, the HealthFest provided health education and free health services to hundreds of attendees from the Los Angeles area. We Have Moved!   The California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation is excited to announce that, as of May 2015, we have changed office locations!  We have moved to a more convenient location in the heart of midtown Sacramento – 2230 L Street. We would like to thank and extend our gratitude to all the organizations and individuals who assisted us with this transition. Do you know your sunscreen? We all know that it is important to use sunscreen on those sunny (and even cloudy!) summer days in order to protect ourselves from sunburns and related skin cancers. But what does all the information on the packaging actually mean and how do you know which sunscreen offers the necessary protection? This NPR article helps to explain sunscreen a little better. FDA Orders Removal of Trans Fats from Food On Tuesday, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will work toward the elimination of trans fats in the food industry over the next 3 years.  Trans fats have been linked with a vast array of health complications including coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, etc.  Discontinuing the consumption of trans fats is a crucial step toward healthy living.  The CMA Foundation supports a healthy, nutritious diet and encourages the public to examine their own diets and avoid unhealthy additives, such as trans fats. Heroes and Healers: Stories of Courage and Altruism in Times of Genocide   The Armenian American Medical Society (AAMS) celebrated Heroes and Healers: Stories of Courage and Altruism in Times of Genocide, in commemoration of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The event honored medical professionals and others who embody the spirit of humanitarianism, looking past ethnic and religious differences to save lives and champion the plight of the victims of these and other atrocities of the 20th and 21st century. NEPO Physician Appointed to the Medical Board of California by Governor Brown Randy W. Hawkins, MD, 61, of Los Angeles, has been appointed to the Medical Board of California. Dr. Hawkins has been assistant professor at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science since 2014 and a physician and surgeon in private practice since 1986.
