World Hepatitis Day

World Hepatitis Day July 28 is World Hepatitis Day.  It is a day of awareness, prevention, and remembrance.  Hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide are currently living with a form of hepatitis and over a million individuals die each year from the disease.  Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer if untreated, but it can be treated through early detection. We've Moved!

We Have Moved!   The California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation is excited to announce that, as of May 2015, we have changed office locations!  We have moved to a more convenient location in the heart of midtown Sacramento – 2230 L Street. We would like to thank and extend our gratitude to all the organizations and individuals who assisted us with this transition. Do you know your sunscreen? We all know that it is important to use sunscreen on those sunny (and even cloudy!) summer days in order to protect ourselves from sunburns and related skin cancers. But what does all the information on the packaging actually mean and how do you know which sunscreen offers the necessary protection? This NPR article helps to explain sunscreen a little better. FDA Orders Removal of Trans Fats from Food On Tuesday, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will work toward the elimination of trans fats in the food industry over the next 3 years.  Trans fats have been linked with a vast array of health complications including coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, etc.  Discontinuing the consumption of trans fats is a crucial step toward healthy living.  The CMA Foundation supports a healthy, nutritious diet and encourages the public to examine their own diets and avoid unhealthy additives, such as trans fats. CMA Foundation Launches Adult Vaccination Campaign

The California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation today announced the launch of its “Community Immunity” Adult Vaccine Schedule, an educational resource for California physicians and their patients on adult immunization needs. The CMA Foundation guide provides adults with detailed information on vaccine-preventable diseases, their symptoms, and long-term risks, and makes vaccine recommendations for adults based on age, dosage, and vaccine type. “Recent outbreaks of measles and pertussis (whooping cough) in California are critical reminders of the ongoing threat of vaccine-preventable illness and the importance of immunizations,” said David Holley, MD, CMA Foundation Chair. “However the threat of these diseases is not limited to our children – adults are also susceptible to outbreaks ...

Coming March 18th! CQC is pleased to present a half-day discussion and interactive event focused on the intersection of social determinants of health (SDOH) and quality improvement. Dr. Rishi Manchanda, Medical Director and physician keynotes this event, setting the stage as to the definition, role and importance of SDOH. Lung Association releases State of Tobacco Control 2015 report

The American Lung Association released its annual State of Tobacco Control 2015 report. The report grades all 50 states and the District of Columbia on four key tobacco control policy areas.  In addition, the American Lung Association in California has released a California version of the report which issues grades for all 482 incorporated cities and towns and all 58 counties in our state. Local grades in California are awarded in three categories: Smokefree Outdoor Air, Smokefree Housing, and Reducing Sales of Tobacco Products. CalHIPSO seeks physicians to sign up for free practice transformation assistance The California Health Information Partnership and Services Organization (CalHIPSO) is applying for a grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to give California physicians access to free health practice improvement tools and services that would normally be cost prohibitive.
