Jim Hay is a Family Physician practicing fulltime in Encinitas, CA where he founded North Coast Family Medical Group in 1978. He was Chief of Staff at Scripps Hospital, Encinitas in 1985 and 1986 and the President of the San Diego County Medical Society in 2001. He has been on the Board of Trustees of the California Medical Association since 1994, was elected Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates in 2002 and Speaker in 2006 and is now the Immediate Past President. He is also the past president of the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation and the “Champion” of its Project Access, a program to connect volunteer physicians to patients who need their care. (He has chaired the Work Group of stakeholders dedicated to reestablishing a Physician Health Program since 2007 and the Board of the non-profit it created since 2009.)
He grew up in Philadelphia, graduated from Duke University and Jefferson Medical College and did his Family Practice Residency at the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton. (He has led successful efforts to improve the focus of both his Medical Society and the CMA by chairing both of their Reengineering Task Forces.) He was honored as the 2003 San Diego County Medical Society Physician member of the Year. And he is happiest when jogging, watching Duke basketball, or visiting any of his four grandchildren.
